Ordinary People, Doing Extraordinary Things (A HERO Amidst the Storm)

Once the cleanest and amongst the greatest City in the National Capital Region but now turned out to be a devastation, submerged in a muddy water; Fought the wrath of Typhoon Ondoy forenoon of September 26.

Forty-seven-year-old Bong Abuedo, a taxi driver for quite some years and husband of a forty-six-year-old Carolina Abuedo, a shoe maker in their place; Had three daughters ages ranges from 25, 23 and 22. Living in the Marikina Settlement, Nangka Marikina City in Uabayami Road.

This Forty-seven-year-old whom I called Mang Bong or Kuya Bong, was one of the most influential and outstanding person in their place, especially in their neighborhood. A leader to be exact, with great pride and honor to his town-folks and to his country.

A person who has passion to help the needy even if he himself is also in need. He is not even in position nor a government official but he took charge over matters that needed his assistance and aid; He cared for his constituents and ply with their concerns. Simply a person zealous on his will to help and serve.

Amidst the storm there is a man who is willing, enough to sacrifice himself just to save other people’s lives. "A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast." A person undoubtedly not a god, but with overwhelming courage and bravery who helped his comrades in the middle of a chest-high flood during the wrath of Typhoon Ondoy daybreak of Saturday dated September 26 of current year.

According to Kuya Bong, heavy rain was already pouring very rapidly overnight and their barangay was alarmed with the situation. And put the people to panic. The dam was opened, same day, speeding up the rise of water by 12pm. At exactly one in the afternoon, the water reaches up to the third floor, Kuya Bong continued.

First thought, leave the things behind and go up on the roof, Kuya Bong exclaimed to his family and to his neighbors; Then go directly to the fourth floor of a nearby building. There are only 5 men during that time in their neighborhood, the others were afar and everyone is already in panic, but then again Kuya Bong took over.

Together with the other men, they managed to save their people from the flood and brought them up to the fourth floor of the nearby building, through walking on the roofs of each house and with them are children, and some are just babies. Imagine a one-month baby was placed inside a plastic and was crossed across the fourth floor just to be saved. Desperate times, calls for desperate measures.

There comes a raindbow after the rain, a new beginning. But for them after that rain was a tragedy, with great pain and sorrow; Hunger strikes, no food, no water, no clothing no nothing. Kuya Bong sadly utter that they have no food to eat for 2-consecutive days, only water was left to nourish them.

They were first rescued by their mayor, Mayor Fernando of Marikina and delivered some goods for them. Then followed by NGOs like and other organizations and OB Philippines is among the NGO who gave help to them; Through medical care, relief goods, cleaning assistance and counseling.

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' – as regarded by OB Philippines, to be their cry for the needy and Kuya Bong was very thankful such kind-hearted fellow Filipinos arrived in their place; Only thing they can depend on and without them they could possibly die, he added.

He also added his plans after this tragedy, that his roof was his first priority to shelter his family and work again as a taxi driver to have a new beginning. What was left with them was the clothes their wear and a house without a roof.

In his prayers, he exalted, that the people around him will have no sickness and additional problems, additional help from the government and assistance in sending his kids and other kids to school.

Such great man, Kuya Bong was; A simple man, without anything to offer except his time, hand and heart. Even the smallest of what he has, he will give away just to ease someone’s needs and despair. In Kuya Bong’s being, their lies a true person of God, a hero amidst the storm.

Let us repent and ask for His forgiveness

"wala naman namatay sa block nila" - aforementioned by Felisa Balid, a housewife of 5 children with a husband working in a construction firm and living at Block 13 Lot 34 Phase 1 Balubad Marikina.

A simple yet happy family, under a house-built on wood in Brgy. Balubad until one day, it was a Saturday, dated September 26, year 2009; It was 10 in the morning, and the flood was already waist-high, heavy raindrops pour them very rapidly.

Felisa and her children have no choice but to leave their wooden house, and her husband was the only person left to guard their house.

Walked over some houses' roof and went to a nearby third floor house in their place. She didn't manage to carry anything, any materials, except her kids.

At first all the people in that building was scared, she said, because the water rose up to the second floor of the building and it was only a 3-story house. But for the meantime, together with their neighbors, stayed there to be safe.

Despite this tragedy, the fact that they are experiencing deep sorrow and pain right now, cough, colds and athletes foot; She said, "okay na, masaya, kasama mga anak at buong pamilya, pero yun nga maputik parin ang bahay at sira na lahat, wala ng mga gamit."

She also added that this experience, this storm that hit them, hit us, was amongst the most excruciation in their entire life, thinking that it is really the end of the world.

They don't have anything left, as in none, no money, no foods, no, nothing; And the only thing they depend on are their kind-hearted fellow Filipinos and the relief goods they bring with them.

She was very thankful to those people that help her, that help them in times like this. The relief goods, clothing and everyday necessity that were given to them, truly Filipinos are united. She said.

And she added, saying "Lahat ng tao kailangan maghanda, mayaman man o mahirap, tayo'y magkaisa. Kulang tayo sa pananalig sa Diyos; manumbalik tayong lahat sa kanya upang tayo'y patawarin."

"All of us should be ready, poor or rich, unite. We lack faith with Jesus; Let us repent and ask for His forgiveness."

For All You've Done!

We were neither humble nor arrogant rather TRUE and GENUINE.

It is not a human right; To stare not fight; While broken nations dream
Open up our eyes, so blind; That we might find; The Mercy for the need

It is not too far a cry; To much to try; To help the least of these
Politics will not decide; If we should rise; And be your hands and feet

We have chosen Action over Apathy.
We stand by our Principles.
We are like the Salmons brave and strong never fearing to face the odds because we Believe.
We believe in the power of Unity and Collective effort and together we will fight,
for a Just and Free society!

There will always be time for everything,
Time to mourn, time to move in and time to rejoice.
The learnings we've regain, will lead us closer to our vision.

We fall down, we stand up and we fight.
It was very hard to accept the mere fact of winning in the end you lose a fight
The pain and suffering we've been through had payed off yet unrelieving but let this be the drive to stand up again and fight.
At this point of time, it's very hard to rejoice, at last it's over yet mourn more and try to accept what had happened.
I believe everyone had made their part, seeing them run over, tired and half asleep, serious and very eager to win. Run through some errands and yet made a good gob and for that a well round clap for a very great fight.
I am very proud of these guys who stand by their principles and never fearing to face the odds, you were awesome and you deserve to be in those seats apart from what the outcome showed. It is you who should be there.
Nonetheless, it shouldn't halt there, the moment of truth had came but the battle hasn't started yet, truly we lost a fight but there's no time to mourn more better yet solve the conflict and start a fresh beginning.
From this experience we should learn, the learnings we've realized and we will use it to rise!
We lost but we will never be defeated.
For sure we have touched some of the hearts of every people inside that university, inside those four corners of every class rooms and we shouldn't stop there. Moreover we should adhere to them more and never be complacent but reach out for them and show them what we're capable of and what we're made of.

The anxiety, nervousness and depressions inside that room is really hard to accommodate, seeing those sorted papers gave me a blast. After leaving that room, after counting those papers I nearly cried even in the event of counting, I am just holding down my tears to fall because it'll be hard to pull if it fell down already. I tried my best to hold my tears after counting, after seeing other colleges already done with the counting and heard the results gave me a lot harder feeling. I can't hold my tears for a second, I was already teary eyed when I face them, but I hurried down to some dark place and there I mourn, talk to my bestfriend on the phone and cried a lot. But still I tried to be strong.

The announcement, I wasn't suppose to cry anymore, I tried holding my tears more and more cause this time I should be a lot much stronger. From the other room I tried going back and forth to the fountain and calm myself off. I entered the room smiling and telling to the two to smile and cheer up. I already know the results and I'm still holding on my feet grabbing their shoulders to comfort them and when they started announcing it, I looked at them one by one and looked up to God and also to pull my teary eye up. I said to myself I cried after counting I shouldn't cry now because I should comfort them. But seeing them mourn was too painful for me to look, seeing my governor and candidates cried their tears out made me mourn more but realizing I should be even much stronger.

I hoped for the best but it turned out to be the worst. I rely on false hopes and wishful thinking though I'm sure in the end there will always be HOPE. I prayed hard everyday, I prayed for winning mercies but I lacked action. That's where my flaws come in. But in the end I still hope for the best and prayed to God to let His WILL be done. If this is His WILL, I have nothing against it, because I know deep down in my core, there's something in stored for us tomorrow.

Simply, our lives are not determined by what happens to us,but how we react to what happens; not by what life brings us but by the attitude we bring to life.
